Average ring size for women
The Antique Jewellery Company, a UK jewellery shop, says most women wear a US 6 to 7, and the most common size is about 6½. In the UK that is a size M½, which means "M and a half".
Hand size makes a difference. Women with smaller hands often wear a US 5 to 6, and women with larger hands often wear a 7 or 8.
Other jewellers, looking at what their own customers buy, find much the same. TDFJ, a US jewellery shop, finds most women buy a US 5 to 7. One jeweller who looked at 5,000 orders found an average of 7, and Martin Jewelers says most women wear a 5 to 7.
So US 6 to 7 is a good guess. But an average is only a guess for one person, so measuring her finger, or a ring she already wears, is far more reliable.
Ring size chart for women
Find your size here by measuring a ring you own straight across the inside (the "across" column), or by wrapping a paper strip round your finger and measuring its length (the "around" column). UK and EU are the British and European names for the same size.
| US | UK | EU | Across (mm) | Around (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | H | 47 | 14.88 mm | 46.8 mm |
| 4½ | I | 48 | 15.29 mm | 48.0 mm |
| 5 | J½ | 49 | 15.70 mm | 49.3 mm |
| 5½ | K½ | 51 | 16.10 mm | 50.6 mm |
| 6 | L½ | 52 | 16.51 mm | 51.9 mm |
| 6½ (average) | M½ | 53 | 16.92 mm | 53.1 mm |
| 7 | N½ | 54 | 17.32 mm | 54.4 mm |
| 7½ | O½ | 56 | 17.73 mm | 55.7 mm |
| 8 | P½ | 57 | 18.14 mm | 57.0 mm |
| 8½ | Q½ | 58 | 18.54 mm | 58.3 mm |
| 9 | R½ | 60 | 18.95 mm | 59.5 mm |
In Europe the size is simply the length round the inside in millimetres, so a European 54 is the same ring as a US 7.

Do women have an average pinky ring size?
Nobody has worked out a reliable average for pinky rings, so it is best to measure the little finger itself. Wrap a thin strip of paper round it, mark where the ends meet, and measure up to the mark in millimetres. Then find the nearest number in the "around" column.
Questions people often ask
How can I find out her ring size without asking?
Borrow a ring she wears on that finger and measure straight across the inside with a ruler, in millimetres. Find that number in the "across" column. Or lay the ring on the circle in the ring sizer on our home page, after matching a bank card to the screen. A ring from a different finger probably won't give the right size.
How should a well-fitting ring feel?
A good fit should glide on without force, then feel just slightly snug as it crosses the knuckle. Once it sits at the bottom of the finger, it ought to feel snug but never painful, as Jewelers Mutual explains.
Which ring size measures 7 cm around?
A strip of 7 cm (70 mm) is a European 70, which is a US 13. That is much bigger than most women wear, so if your strip really measures 7 cm, measure again before you order.
