The average engagement ring size for women is about a US 6 to 7, most often a 6.5. That is a good place to begin, but what really counts is the size of her own ring finger. If you can find her real size without her noticing, the ring is far more likely to fit on the day.

What jewellers say is typical
TDF Jewelry, a US jeweller, says most of the women's rings it sells are between US 5 and 7. Another jeweller looked at 5,000 orders and found the average woman wore a 7. So 6 to 7 is a good starting point, though her size may be smaller or larger.
The most common size
If you had to pick one number, US 6.5 sits in the middle of what jewellers report. In the UK that is an M½, which means "M and a half".
Think of it as a guess rather than a measurement. Hands come in all sizes, so a common size only helps when there is no other way to find hers.
Working out her size in secret
In many countries, engagement rings go on the ring finger of the left hand, so that is the finger to measure.
The simplest way is to borrow a ring she wears on that finger and lay it on the circle in the ring sizer on our home page. If you can only borrow it for a moment, draw round the inside of the ring on paper. You can measure across your drawing later.

How should the ring feel?
A well-fitting ring goes on with ease but pushes back a little as it passes the knuckle. At the base of the finger it ought to sit snugly and never hurt, says Jewelers Mutual.
If a finger lands between two sizes, go with the bigger one, particularly when the ring is wide. And whenever you are not sure, choosing the larger size is safer, since shrinking a ring is simpler than stretching one.

What does a size 7 ring measure?
A US 7 is 17.32 mm across the inside, a little over two-thirds of an inch. In Japan and India the same ring is a size 14.
Can I use centimetres with a ring size chart?
Yes. A paper strip of 5.4 cm round her finger is a European 54, or about a US 7.

Most men wear about a US 10, which is nearly 20 mm across the inside.
